University System - Georgia Tech - Annual Reports, 1951-1977
Scope and Contents
The Engineering Experiment Station was created by the General Assembly by the Act of August 18, 1919 for the purpose of promoting scientific, engineering and industrial research, encouraging the development and use of Georgia's natural resources, fostering industrial and economic development through research and assisting national programs of science and technology. The professors conducting research projects were required to publish their findings in bulletins, especially projects involving original research, and to send copies of such bulletins to libraries, newspapers and individuals interested in such research projects. The Station was placed under the direction and control of the Georgia Institute of Technology. The number of units and projects increased as fast as scientific knowledge increased and not all the units listed below were part of the original Station, but by the early 1970's the Station was organized into the following units: (1) Systems and Techniques Laboratory, whose primary interests were in electromagnetic systems, bio medical studies and electronic countermeasures; (2) Radar and Instrumentation Laboratory, which performed research in radar technology, computers and electronic support measures; (3) The Systems Engineering Division, which had interests in computer simulation of large-scale systems, cost benefit analysis and operational/systems analysis; (4) The Office of international Programs coordinates international activities of the Station; (5) The Technology and Development Laboratory which was concerned with business, industrial and governmental needs and developed programs to fill such needs; (6) The Applied Sciences Laboratory did research in solid state sciences, solar energy and materials technology and energy and environmental analysis; (7) The Electromagnetics Laboratory did research in radiation systems and electro-optics; (8) The Electronics Technology Laboratory conducted research in electromagnetic compatibility and communications technology and (9) The Nuclear Research Center, which performed research in biological, chemical, physical and biotechnological needs to improve environmental quality and medical science.
