Scope and Contents
This series contains unbound original and microfilmed miscellaneous records of the Court of Ordinary (now Probate Court) of Oglethorpe County. This convoluted series has many different and varied records including (but not inclusive): (1) inventories and appraisements and bills of sale (2) school and constable elections (3) court contracts (4) homesteads (5) habeas corpus (6) constable oaths (7) deputy sheriff and tax collector oaths (8) administrators of estates bonds and oaths (9) annual returns on estates (10) petitions and orders committing lunatics to asylum (11) rent and crop contracts (12) promissory notes (13) attachments. On the back of most records is the book and page where the files are recorded. There is no consistency to the kind of files found in this series. This series has records that are also found in Series 1 (Estate Records and Wills), 4 (Apprentice Indentures) and 5 ({Petitions and Orders) of Record Group 209. The finding aid has been arranged in this order: (1) by county business, court business and court records (2) by type of record generated (3) alphabetically by name of citizen record refers to.
