Scope and Contents
This series consists of original and copied material pertaining to the administration of the State Literature Commission of Georgia. The files include (not an inclusive list): (1) correspondence, (2) newsclippings, (3) pamphlets, (4) newsletters, (5) contracts, (6) book reviews, (7) minutes, (8) expense reports, (9) copies of the Congressional Record, (10) and related items. Created in 1953 by Georgia Law 1953, page 135, Code Section 26-6301a, the purpose of the Commission was "to make such investigations as may be necessary into all sales of literature which they have reason to suspect is detrimental to the morals of the citizens of this State; to hold hearings and make findings on literature they have found to be obscene through investigation or evidence." The Commission was to "...make findings upon all hearings and shall have the power to prohibit the distribution of any literature they find to be obscene, by first notifying the offending party, or parties, 30 days prior to recommending prosecution as hereinafter provided"...exempting certain literature (Sec. 26-6307a). The Commission was to have three members, appointed by the Governor with Senate confirmation, for 4-year terms. The Commission elected its own Chairman. Governor Jimmy Carter abolished the Commission in 1974.
