Jekyll Island State Park Authority - Board - Minutes
Scope and Contents
This series consists of the bound copies of the official minutes of meetings held by the Jekyll Island State Park Authority. Topics discussed (a random cross-sample) include: (1) meeting every 2nd Saturday of each calendar month; (2) planning the general development of the Island; (3) cost of bridge linking Jekyll Island to the mainland; (4) cost of toll to be collected; (5) establishing Jekyll game refuge; (6) budget appropriations; and, (7) adoption of by-laws to govern the Authority. Having a colorful and often times "fabulous" past, Jekyll Island today is owned by the State of Georgia, purchased in 1947 from the Jekyll Island Club for $650,000. It is operated by the Jekyll Island State Authority which was created by an Act of the General Assembly in 1950. The minutes of this series show the various aspects involved with the Authority as it turned Jekyll Island into one of the "seven wonders of Georgia". The Island was opened to the public on December 11, 1954.
