Scope and Contents
his series consists of speeches and related papers of the Governors of Georgia. Included are: (1) speech notes; (2) speech texts; (3) press releases; (4) speech transcripts; (5) speech working papers; (6) rough drafts of speeches; and (7) memorandums concerning speeches.
Carl E. Sanders, 1963-1967
Included are press release texts of speeches and the speeches themselves. The speeches have been marked preparatory to final printing in the published volume of Sanders' speeches. These files are arranged chronologically by date of speech with an index preceding.
Lester G. Maddox, 1967-1971
Included are speech texts, individual speech files, and speech working files. Speech texts include copies of texts as released to the press and, beginning in January 1969, copies used by the Governor at the podium. In many instances, the latter copy contains changes made by the Governor including new topics and wording added to the original text. The individual speech files contain correspondence, memorandums and fact sheets prepared for the Governor. In rare instances a copy of the final speech is included. The speech working files contain copies of rough drafts of speeches used for review by staff members preparing the final draft. In a few cases a rough draft of a letter to government officials are included. Each of the three parts is arranged chronologically by date of speech.
Jimmy Carter, 1971-1975
Included are speech transcripts, speech notes, fact sheets and memorandums concerning speeches. These records are arranged by general subject of speech and thereunder chronologically by date of speech. An subject index is included.
Governor George Busbee (1975-1983)
Included are speech transcripts arranged by the notebook numbers assigned to them by the Governor's staff.
Governor Joe Frank Harris (1983-1991)
These files are arranged chronologically with indexes included in each folder listing the titles and dates on which the enclosed speeches were given. Also included are speeches made by First Lady Elizabeth Harris, the first speeches of a First Lady of Georgia transferred to the Archives for permanent retention.
