Biographical / Historical
John Newton of Athens, Clarke Co., GA, appears to have been in the lumber and hardware business in his early years. He traded largely in Georgia lands, specializing in what had been original Cherokee County land lots, but also buying and selling in all counties. Many of his sales were made on credit, which accounts for the large number of notes he owned. Later he traded in Alabama land warrants and then in Missouri land warrants. In 1858 his tax return showed his property valued at nearly $185,000.
