James Stapler Dozier (1843 - 1935) grew up in a Columbia County, Georgia, farming community, the son of William Hunt (1814 - 1884) and Martha S. Stapler Dozier (1819 - 1880). James, served as a private in the Richmond Hussars, Cobb's Legion, during the Civil War, was also very active in the Georgia National Guard. By the 1870 Census, William, Martha and some of their children lived in Floyd County, Georgia. In the 1880 Census, William and some of his children moved to Atlanta where he had a drugstore with his sons-in-law on Ashby Street and by 1910 James S. Dozier had joined his father and siblings in Fulton County, Georgia. After his father's death in 1884, James continued the business. In 1886 he enrolled in the Governor's Horse Guard; and James S. Dozier served as lieutenant colonel, aide-de-camp, on the staff of the governor at least through 1909. In the 1910 Census, Dozier is listed as City Engine Inspector still living in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. In 1928 James was elected brigadier general of the North Georgia Brigade of the United Confederate Veterans. James Stapler Dozier died in Fulton County, Georgia in 1935 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
