The United Daughters of the Confederacy, spear-headed by Helen Plane, a Civil War widow, organized the Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association (SMCMA) to raise money for the Stone Mountain carving and to supervise its day-to-day operations. However, long before 1958, when the state of Georgia reorganized the Association as the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, the latter name was often used on documents relating to activities at the site of the huge granite mountain in DeKalb County, Georgia.
