The Oliver family originated in South Carolina and may have come to Georgia as early as 1820. Curtis married Nancy Davis from South Carolina and lived in Lumpkin County, Georgia, where he first was captain of the local militia. His brother, Thomas W. Oliver married Mary F. Plemons of North Carolina in 1841 and settled first in Gilmer County and then in Fannin County, Georgia. Thomas died before 1860.
