Scope and Contents

The collection contains scrapbooks about: the Atlanta Opera House; the DeGive family, owners of the opera house; and the opening of Gone with the Wind in Loews Grand Theatre, formerly the opera house. Photographs, newspaper clippings, and greeting cards are included. Some material is related to James R. Bramlett, stage manager at the building for forty years.

Biographical / Historical

Lila Wash was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to Mattie Moore and James W. Wash, a dairyman. In 1921, she married Edwin D. Kennedy (1872-1941), an Atlanta businessman. She was deeply involved in the Atlanta theater community. She was one of the founders of the Atlanta Civic Theatre (Theatre Atlanta), served on the board of the Alliance Theatre and the Atlanta Arts Alliance and, for 10 years, was a member of the board of directors for the American National, Theater and Academy. She was also a member of the board of the Atlanta Arts Festival and was chairman of the festival's performing arts committee in 1964-1965. She died in June of 1978.
