Scope and Contents

This single letter was written in Atlanta by Erskine to Franklin P. Brown, the young son of Governor Joseph E. Brown in Milledgeville, Georgia. He sent books to the boy and described his favorite childhood stories. He also commented that "Gen. Finegan has given the Yankees a good drubbing in East Florida."

Biographical / Historical

John, a jurist, was born in Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to the United States by 1841 when he was admitted to the Florida bar. He married Rebecca Smith in 1851 in Georgia, living first in Newnan and then by 1855 in Atlanta. Although strongly opposed to secession, he served in the Georgia Militia and supported the Confederacy. He was US Judge, District of Georgia, from 1866 - 1882 and died in Atlanta, Georgia.
