Hammack wrote his father, describing the countryside around Camp McCulloch, 200 miles west of Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was doing business under Dr. Massie(?) "for General Pike's Brigade."

Biographical / Historical
Christopher was the son of Robert B. Hammack or Hammock of Carroll County, Georgia. In 1860 he was living with his brother, Joseph T. Hammack, and family in Sevier County, Arkansas, while he taught school. Christopher probably enlisted in Company B of the 19th Arkansas Regiment Volunteers when he wrote this letter.
