Martha was the daughter of Elizabeth T. Sanford and Green Hill Jordan of Milledgeville, Georgia. She married James Gardner (1813-1874) in 1847 and lived with him in Augusta, Georgia, and New York City, New York, where he worked as a publisher, broker, and banker. Following his death, his widow lived in Georgia but continued to do business in New York.
