Detailed and expressive letters from Akin to his friend during a time when both men had left their homes to take refuge in Elberton and Brooks County, Georgia, respectively. Akin wrote about family relations, medical services, religious affairs, politics, states rights, his philosophy concerning slaves, and various disasters. He was able to give Land a complete account of the Union Army's destruction of Cassville.
