Biographical / Historical
Thomas Howard Dozier was born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, but spent half his life in Athens where he and his wife reared ten children. His second wife was Mary Hutcheson, in whose father's school he had taught when young. Thomas graduated from Emory College in 1856; rose to captain of the Gilmer Blues, 6th Regiment GA Infantry, Co. K, in the Civil War; taught school in the area; and served as Clarke County Superintendent of Schools for 30 years until his death. His sons, James (Jim) H. and Augustus (Gus) W. Dozier both trained as engineers but, after trying employment in various locations, spent most of their careers in the Athens lumber business or engaged in buying and renting property. Jim never married. He was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Gus married Emily R. Hutcheson, Mary's niece; and they had one child, Emily Augusta Dozier.
