Bentley family papers
Scope and Contents
Seven letters by and to the Bentleys in Georgia, some from J. R. Bentley and his wife, one from J. R. in service, 1862. Also included is E. M. Bentley's Oath of Allegiance, 1865, and a later list of Bentley births. John Kytle, a minister in Ayersville, GA, is mentioned in the letters and may have supported abolitionism.

Biographical / Historical
The Bentley family came from Virginia and the Carolinas to Habersham County, Georgia in the 1840s. Neighbors and friends moved west and wrote to Elias Mitchell Bentley (b. ca. 1813). John R. Bentley (ca. 1847-1864), perhaps his nephew, served in the 7th Regiment GA Volunteers., Companies H and K. The Kytle family, also from Habersham County, were neighbors and intermarried with the Bentleys.
