John Webb memoir
Scope and Contents
An autobiography written at the request of the author's daughter, Julia Ann Webb Gay, with her occasional annotation. Beginning with a history of the Webb family from their arrival in Virginia to their settling in Georgia in 1810, John recounts incidents of his own life from birth (p. 27) through the Civil War. The memoir contains information about his army life against the Native Americans (1813), his business career in Newborn, Newton Co., GA,, family relations, and the losses he suffered during the Civil War.

Biographical / Historical
John was born in Virginia to Frances B. Walker and Francis Webb. After the death of his mother, the family moved to Georgia where John married Ann S. Thomason in 1815. His family lived in Wilkes County, Georgia, until about 1822 when they moved to Newton County, Georgia, and there he spent the rest of his life.
