Biographical / Historical
James V., Marshall Lafayette, Felix G., Catherine, and Flora were some of the children of L. N. and Hannah Smith from South Carolina who moved to Missouri and then Tennessee before settling in Union County, Georgia. Both Marshall and Felix served in Company I of the 52nd Regiment Georgia Volunteers. from Dawson County, Georgia. James became a schoolteacher in Blairsville; while Marshall became a Dawsonville lawyer and married Mary C. (or Mollie Kate), probably from Alabama, about 1870. His orphaned sisters, Flora and Catherine, initially lived with the couple. Flora then married William Allen, a Gilmer County, Georgia, merchant. She died before 1900. Marshall and Mollie moved to Gainesville, Hall County, shortly after 1880.
