Montgomery family papers
Scope and Contents
1863 letter from "Matt" Jordan to his wife, Louisa, while he was serving in Company A of the 27th Regiment Georgia Volunteers. Two letters by Lizzie or Eliza, who lived in DeSoto, Sumter County, Georgia. The first is to her mother and sister, Hattie, about work, weather, crops, and family, Mr. Tarver, Tudie, and Johnny. The second is to a nephew, Frank, about their family, supposedly the Montgomerys, who originated in Bertie, North Carolina, crossed Georgia, lived in Lafayette and Auburn, Alabama, and were in Taylor County, Georgia, in 1890.

Biographical / Historical
The Montgomery family described in the letters has not been identified. First names of the siblings were: William(s) Franklin, b. 1829; Benjamin Theodore, b. 1832; James Thomas, b. 1835; Eliza/Lizzie, b. 1844; Hattie/Harriet, b. 1847; and Emma, b. 1852. Their parents are unknown. They are not the Vashti Brannon and Samuel Montgomery family of Crawford and Taylor Counties., GA. The donor appears to descend from the Montgomery family of Meriwether County, Georgia, but no connection can be made with the above names either. It is possible that these people were not Montgomerys. James Madison "Matt" Jordan married Louisa Lancaster in 1858 in Marion County, Georgia, and was living there in 1860. The Jordan connection to the other people in the collection is unknown.
