Biographical / Historical

For the last third of the nineteenth century, African-Americans had their own companies as part of the Georgia State Troops. At first all such troops paid for most of their supplies. As time went on, however, state monies were provided for canteens, haversacks, and other necessities. By 1900, the adjutant general of Georgia wrote that it was not fair for colored militia to receive state funds when they could not be used to combat riots and restore peace. Over the next few years, these black units disappeared.
