The majority of letters in this collection are authored by John C. Butner to his father while he was in service, with two letters by his brothers. Earlier documents relate to relatives and business in Stokes County, North Carolina, and Cobb County, Georgia. Biographical / Historical
Thomas M. Butner (1797-1874) was born in Stokes County, North Carolina, and married Anna Barbara Foltz of the same place. She died following the birth of their son John Christopher Butner. Thomas moved to Walton County, Georgia, by 1832, where he married Marena Nehemiah Chandler. The family grew to include eight more children, though not all survived. The family eventually moved to Newton County, Geogia and then to Powder Springs, Cobb County, Georgia, before 1860. When the Civil War broke out, Thomas' third son, William E., enlisted in the 7th Regt. GA Vols., Co. D, and was killed a year later in June 1862. The second son, Allen S., was initially rejected for service. By December 1862, the eldest son, John C., then aged 35 and widowed with two sons, enlisted in the 1st Regt. GA Vols, 2nd Co. F, and served about six months at Ft. Gaines, Alabama, before furnishing a substitute in July 1863.
