Scope and Contents
The collection is primarily made up of incoming letters to Elizabeth concerning the death of her husband in 1864. There is also a letter from brother J. J. at James Island, South Carolina, in 1863. Biographical / Historical
Elizabeth Moore was born in Upson County, Georgia, possibly the daughter of James Moore and Jane Hollifield. She had several siblings, including John Jackson Moore, who married Mary Ann Trice. Elizabeth married James Banks Colquitt in 1850 and lived in the Thomaston area. James served in the 6th Regiment Alabama Infantry, Company G, and was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. Elizabeth managed to rear her family, continue farming, and secure a widow's pension in the 1890s. Her brother J. J. survived the war in the 32nd Regiment Georgia Infantry, Company I.
