Scope and Contents

Primarily Civil War letters from John H. McTyre (sometimes McTier), 41st Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company C, who in one letter wrote from the ditches west of Atlanta. He wrote to his wife Caroline about the death of her brother, James Cox, of his fears that he may never see his family again, and makes references to their sons, Randy and Jimmy. Also included is a letter from Caroline Cox to John H. McTier in Alabama before their marriage.

John Howard McTyre was the son of Mary Howard and William F. McTyre of Cobb County, Georgia. He married Caroline Cox, daughter of Margaret Moore and Miranda (Mirandy) Cox of South Carolina, around 1854.
