Nelson family papers
Scope and Contents
These papers were gathered while family lines were being traced and include Nelson correspondence from the nineteenth century, notes from published sources, twentieth century genealogical correspondence, and a family Bible. The collection contains: Charles Nelson's business records, a few letters, his notarized marriage certificate, and some memorial records; William E. Nelson letters from the Civil War period; letters of Eulalie Greer McDowell and Sarah N. Brown who did the research; and some Dawson research notes.

Biographical / Historical
General Charles H. Nelson was born in Wilkes County, Georgia, to William and Elizabeth Nelson. He married Ruth Amanda M. Dawson in Cass County, Georgia, in 1833, and they reared their family in Gordon County, Georgia. General Nelson participated in the Cherokee Indian removal and served in both the Seminole Indian War and the Mexican War. His children included Hannah Nelson (who married William H. Morris and became the stepmother of Julia Morris McConnell), William E. Nelson (who was a student at a Marietta military school and died early in the Civil War), and Charles H. R. Nelson.
