Joe Nelson Burton was the son of Ramie C. Burton and Clara Hix of Madison County, Georgia. He had an uncle named James Herschel Burton, who was living in a the Veterans Adminstration hospital in Bay Rivers, Florida, in the 1950s, and a sister, Oneita L. Burton Langford, a schoolteacher in Ila, Georgia. Joe N. Burton served as assistant Secretary of State in Georgia from 1946 - 1969.
