Ella Lillian Wall Van Leer was born in California to Swedish immigrants, Conrad and Mary Wall. She earned a degree in architecture at Berkeley and married Blake Ragsdale Van Leer in 1924. Ella worked from home as she reared three children, designing maps for Rand-McNally and painting portraits. Blake's engineering career caused them to move many times, and Ella also did genealogical research on various branches of their families' history.
