Scope and Contents
Correspondence, census and courthouse records, research notes, and oral history trancription relating to the Dougherty, Daugherty, Smith, and Lillard families in Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia. Of particular interest is the identified photocopy of an Atlanta Calhoun Elementary School photograph (1893 - 1894) and a transcription of a Bradley County, Tennessee, school record book from the early 19th century.

Biographical / Historical
Daniel O'Connell Doughterty, Jr., (1881 - 1958), the compiler of the collection, was born on Forrest Avenue in Atlanta to D. O. Dougherty, Sr., a partner in Silvey and Dougherty Dry Goods Store, and his wife, Elizabeth Jane Smith. After both had died, "a cousin of the compiler. . . , wrote to him, asking for the name of his father's father; with the deepest regret he had to reply that he did not have the desired information; . . ." (Folder 01). From this developed a search that lasted over 30 years.
