Scope and Contents

Civil War letters from the Prescott brothers, Benjamin L. and George M., who served in the 20th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company K, and the 25th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company G, respectively, to their sisters, Mary Anna Prescott Green and Martha O. Prescott Jones. Comments on General Joseph Johnson's campaign in Georgia, 1864. Letters by the sisters in Screven and Laurens Counties, Georgia, discuss brother Homer's death, family relations, religious affairs, and medical services. Many of Martha (Mattie or Pattie) Jones' letters were written around 1900 from Dublin, Georgia, to her married daughter. Slave names appear in two deeds and one letter by George.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin Prescott (1800 - 1867) was born in North Carolina and married Sophia Maria Mahala Herrington before 1830. The couple reared a large family in Screven County, Georgia, including: Benjamin Lawton (b. 1830); Mary Anna (1832 - 1862) who married Benjamin P. Green; Martha Oliver (1836 - 1900) who married William Palmer Jones; and George M. (1840 - 1898). Both Benjamin Sr. and Benjamin Jr. served as state representatives before the Civil War. Benjamin L. Prescott was captured by Union forces in 1862, and upon his release he moved to the Bahamas. Another brother, Homer V., died in the early months of the war.
