James Monroe Adams family papers
Scope and Contents
A 450 page ledger containing Adams' reminiscence of his life together with photographs, newspaper clippings, a Civil War letter, and additions by his descendants, covering events he described from about 1853, such as life on the farm, the slaves, his education, amusements, and family and race relations, mostly in Newton and Walton Counties, Georgia, but also covering his travel to Primitive Baptist meetings in Washington, D. C., Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Records includes information on the Adams, Herndon, Hurst, Malcom, and Preston families and their cemeteries. A second container holds letters by Adams and his siblings, Primitive Baptist church records, and many photographs of family members, their homes, and churches.

Biographical / Historical
James Monroe Adams was the son of Susan Frances Hurst and William Adams of Jasper County, Georgia. He married Nancy Euphrates Malcolm in 1870 and reared a large family in Newton County, Georgia, before moving to Monroe, Georgia, in 1903. He was ordained as a Primitive Baptist minister in 1911.
