John H. Reece Civil War papers
Scope and Contents
Journal (1864 - 1865) kept at Johnson's Island, Ohio, Civil War Prison by the captain of 1st Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Company G. Reece described the weather, war news, and some prison conditions. Also included are: a law notebook kept in Athens, Georgia, 1859; a request for release from camp hospital, 1864; and a photograph of him in late life, ca. 1900.

Biographical / Historical
John H. Reece was the son of Sarah Varner and Alfred Burton Reece. Captured near his home town of Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, in September 1864, during service in the Confederacy, he was released from prison in June 1865. John worked as a lawyer and a judge in Rome and served in the state legislature for four terms.
