Biographical / Historical
Zean Kirkland was the son of Margaret Carver and Moses Kirkland of Georgia. Around 1831, they moved to Coffee County, Georgia. Four of their six sons died in the Civil War; but Zean, whose leg was so badly injured six months after he enlisted in the 50th Regiment, Georgia Volunteers that he never returned to the battlefield, survived to handle the business affairs of several family members. He married Penelope Gaskins around 1859.
