Biographical / Historical
Jewell's Mill was located on the Ogeechee River in Warren County, GA; however, the company store and other buildings making up a village were across the river in Hancock County, GA. The mill was purchased from an earlier developer by Daniel A. Jewell (1822-1896) of New Hampshire in 1857. At that time the locality was known as Rock Factory. The store or commissary was eventually as large as a department store with even an elevator and selling everything from cradles to coffins. Daniel's daughter, Mary Emma (1858-1917), married Col. Wylde L. L. Bowen (1838-1905) from Tennessee who bought a partnership in the mill. In 1883 it became Bowen, Jewell, and Company and, later, Bowen-Jewell Company. In 1920, the entire operation was purchased by the Gant Brothers of North Carolina; but within a few years, the mill was destroyed by fire.
