Joseph Lewis Banning (1807-1875), merchant, originally from Connecticut, married Sylvia Minerva Post in 1835 and moved to Greenville, Meriwether County, Georgia, by 1850 (census). Banning's first four or five children were born in Connecticut and moved to Georgia with their parents and the oldest two sons, James W. and George O. serving in the Civil War, while the oldest daughter, Ellen M., married Ben Freeman. Pattie (Nellie?) Freeman, daughter of Ben and Ellen M. Freeman, married William H. Hinton in 1896 (Meriwether County, Georgia). William and Pattie Hinton's daughter, Ellen, is probably Mrs. R. B.
