Brothers Joseph Green, Zachariah Cowart, and John Williamson (Dick) Collier were born in Early County, Georgia, in the early 19th century. Joseph remained in Arlington, Calhoun County, Georgia, but Zachariah immigrated to Tyler County, Texas, by 1854. Dick Collier apparently served in the 13th Regiment and 32nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry and died as a result of injuries in 1869. Zachariah's son, Jackson, married Laura V. Hicks in Texas in 1879. She was the daughter of William J. Hicks who had also served in the 32nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Company G, and died in 1864. Jackson's brother, Jesse Newton Collier, supposedly married in 1900 as his second wife, Leona Viera (Vi) Griffin, originally from Calhoun County, Georgia, also but who grew up in Tyler County, Texas. She had graduated from Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia, in 1897 with the assistance of Jesse Collier.
