Scope and Contents
Letters (mostly October 1863 - July 1864) from Grimes to his parents while he was with Nelson's Rangers under General Stephen D. Lee in Mississippi. The last letter from his unit is dated July 1 and speaks of his imminent furlough, so he probably missed major fighting later that month.

Biographical / Historical
Thomas was the son of Ann Lewis and Thomas W. Grimes, Sr., a physician in Columbus, Georgia. Thomas, Jr., graduated from the University of Georgia, Athens, and worked as a lawyer and politician after serving in the Civil War for eighteen months. He was a member of the State House of Representatives and the Senate, solicitor general of the Chattahoochee circuit, and a representative in the U.S. Congress. He never married and is buried in Linwood Cemetery in Columbus.
