Scope and Contents

This collection contains research files with notes on and brief histories of more than 100 Georgia institutions that issued currency. There are also many files containing research on the state-owned Western & Atlantic Railroad. Carl also created a website with David Marsh titled Georgia Obsolete Currency. Printed pages of this website are included. The collection also includes some files related to Anderson's other interests. There are also many slides relating to places that Anderson had visited - in particular, locations in Turkey.

City and county files related to currency issued by those entities independently of the state or federal government, respectively. "Change bills" folders seem to deal with changes to the currency itself.

Biographical / Historical

Carl A. Anderson (March 12, 1936 - December 11, 2018) was born in Kane, Pennsylvania. He entered the U.S. Air Force in February 1955 and retired in 1981 as a chief master sergeant after a career of working in an aero-medical team in Greenland, Turkey, Thailand, and the Philippines. From 1955 to 1960, while stationed at Hunter Air Force Base near Savannah, Anderson began collecting old Savannah currency. He retired to Savannah, Georgia before moving to Atlanta, Georgia to in 1984 to finish compiling histories of every institution in Georgia that issued currency from 1802 to 1866. Carl died in 2018 in Kane, Pennsylvania.

Arrangement

Approximately half of the collection is general alphabetized subject files. The other half of the collection is made of groups of subject files, gathered into broad headings. One box contains slides from Carl Anderson’s travels.
