Courtship letters between Robert (Bobbie) G. Mitchell and Amaretta (Nettie) Fondren while he was serving with the 29th Georgia Regiment Volunteers, Company E, and Nettie lived at home in Thomasville, Georgia, or attended Lucy Cobb Institute in Athens. Camp life, war campaigns, family relations, and religious beliefs are described. Additional correspondence by other family members is also included.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Goodwyn Mitchell was born in Thomas County, Georgia, in 1843 to Sophronia Dickey and Richard Mitchell. In 1864, he married Nancy Amaretta Fondren (1845-1929), daughter of Nancy Ann Thompson and John Guyton Fondren of Dublin, Georgia, who moved to Thomas County, Georgia, shortly after Nettie's birth. Robert served as a second lieutenant in the Civil War and later became a lawyer and served in the Georgia Senate. He died in 1926.
