 Series
Identifier: 022-01-035

Scope and Contents

This series contains an original Order Book for the 2nd and 3rd Regiments Infantry, Georgia Militia, Col. Ignatius A. Few, commanding. It covers the period September 26, 1814, to January 1, 1815, in which the regiments were detailed from General Twigg's Division for Federal service in Brigadier General John Floyd's Brigade. Gen. Floyd's command was in turn part of the 6th Military District headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina under the command of Major General Pinkey. They were specifically detailed to the City of Savannah to guard that city and the coast against possible British attack. Included are Brigade and Regimental general orders covering such subjects as: (1) tendering congratulations on entering United States service; (2) maintaining discipline; (3) discharging soldiers due to illness; (4) granting furloughs; (5) conducting courts martial (both general and regimental); (6) appointments; (7) deploying of troops, and (8) granting permission to leave camp During the time period covered, the regiments' headquarters moved from Camp McDonough near Waynesborough (Waynesboro) to Camp Jackson in Effingham County and Camp Covington near Savannah. This book is one of very few extant documenting Georgia's role in the War of 1812. About half the book is utilized and most of the remainder is unused save for a few extraneous notes having nothing to do with the Georgia Militia including: (1) the amount of cotton on the 15th of September, 1850; (2) a list of property destroyed by Gen. Sherman's troops in Washington, County, Georgia, dated March 13, 1872; (3) several lists of supplies all dated in the 1840's, and (4) an undated receipt for curing sick horses.
