Public Health - Public Information - Georgia's Health (Publication)
Scope and Contents
This publication served as the Department's newsletter and was distributed free of charge to the general public by the information office as a health education service. From its advent in the early 1920's to its cessation of publication in October 1972, Georgia's Health reflected very well the growth of the Department and its expansion into an ever increasing number of varied fields of endeavor. In the earlier years it concentrated on disease eradication, public education in health and hygiene matters, and the dissemination of basic information on household sanitation, infant care, etc. In the 1940's and 1950's the emphasis was on the establishment of county health centers. By the 1970's the articles reflect dramatically the growth of the bureaucracy with emphasis placed on new administrative personnel, description of administrative procedures, State government reorganization, federally funded programs, and an impressive variety of fields of Departmental interest. A growth in interest in mental health programs can be noted as well. Generally speaking the articles tend to lengthen through the years and pictures are used more frequently. From time to time special features were included. For example, rhymed "Health - O - Grams", providing practical health and hygiene information, were featured from 1953 through 1963, and for several years crossword puzzles with health themes appeared. Through 1927 Georgia's Health was published quarterly, and generally monthly thereafter.

Arrangement Note
There was a volume and publication numbering system which might best be described as confusing. Consequently, except for those periods,in which the numbering system and the calendar years coincide, the former has been ignored and the publications are arranged by year and then in reverse order by month. The first complete set available is 1936 with some few issues extant as early as 1927. It is important to note, however, that twelve issues were not published every year.
