Walton County - Probate Court - Poor School Fund Records
Scope and Contents
This series contains records of the Poor School Fund of the Court of Ordinary of Walton County. These records include: (1) audit reports of the county school commissioner (2) teacher's certificates (3) teacher's accounts for wages (4) lists of indigent children eligible for participation in the Poor School Fund. The majority of these papers consists of the Poor School tuition vouchers which contain: (1) the names of the indigent children (2) the subjects they were taught (3) the number of days they were in school (4) the cost of their schooling for that period as reported by the teacher to the Trustee of the Poor School Fund. These reports were then sworn to before a justice of the peace who, upon approval of the account, would recommend that reimbursement be made to the teacher by the Ordinary Court out of the Poor School Fund. Upon receipt of the funds the teacher had to testify as to having received the correct amount.
