Scope and Contents

The Georgia Semiquincentenary Commission was created in 1981 by the Georgia General Assembly to oversee the celebration marking the 250th Birthday of the founding of Georgia. This series consists of documents and artifacts created and collected by the Commission and includes the following (not an inclusive list): newspaper clippings of events (originals and photocopies); photographs; correspondence; minutes of meetings; reports; receipts; grants for project money; budgets; artifacts; and brochures and pamphlets. The Commission consisted of unpaid volunteers and was given the sum of $100,000 by the state legislature to distribute amongst the various projects throughout the state. This money was awarded upon approval of individual grant applications previously submitted to the Commission by various civic organizations and individuals. The statewide celebration featured events ranging from festivals and exhibits to fairs and parades. The Commission ceased to exist January 1, 1984.
