Western and Atlantic Railroad - General Freight Agent - Freight Received Or Shipped Registers

 Series
Identifier: 018-07-059

Scope and Contents

This series consists of bound registers containing the records of freight received or shipped to and from stations along the line of the road of the Western & Atlantic and to connecting railroads. Typically, each volume contains: station where merchandise was shipped, freight car number, railroad owning the freight car, date of shipment, list number, point of shipment, destination, articles and quantities of each, container identification markings, consignor, consignee, measurement in feet and inches, weight and class, expenses, proportion the W&A was to receive, proportion due other railroads, amounts payable by the receiving railroads and at the point of shipment, and remarks. In essence, each volume records certain information to show the net receipts due the W&A. The Western and Atlantic received a shipment from another carrier, transported it to an agency along the road or forwarded the shipment to another connecting railroad. Then each of the railroads received a proportionate amount of the total freight charges on the shipment. This record series is an important, unrefined source for the study of freight volume, the types of goods and commodities shipped and the geographical distribution of the Western and Atlantic's freight income. Volume 3, "Freight Received at Chattanooga from Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad for Stations on the W&A and Beyond, February - April, 1866", contains the same information as the other volumes but does not give the consignor or consignee. Volume 4, 1866, contains the headings "Received From" and "Forwarded To" with columns for: amounts paid elsewhere, expenses and, W&A RR freight, and W&A RR freight, expenses, and amount paid here, respectively. In the center between both headings is a listing of depots on the W&A beginning with Atlanta up to Chattanooga and a listing of local railroad companies. The bottom one third page contains a summary expense table for the agent to fill out in order to calculate the balance to debit" in the next report. This volume also shares space with correspondence of Major George Hillyer to General Henry C. Wagner. For information on this please see Series 70, Bound Outgoing Copies of Correspondence of the Commander, Western and Atlantic Road Battalion, Sub-group 10, Affiliated, Non-organizational Records. Volume 6, "Freight Received at Atlanta of the W&A, April - June 1866" is a small volume and contains only: consignee, articles and quantity, list number, a government stamp, and signature of acknowledging receipt. One should also see "Abstract Freight Lists Delivered to Georgia R.R., July-August, 1857" in the Microfilm Library of the Archives. Entered in only the first 55 pages of the volume, the information contains: freight car number, railroad owner, point of shipment, destination, proportion W & A was to receive, and remarks. This fragment of freight information precedes Indentures of Apprenticeship, 1865-1874, Forsyth County.
