Western and Atlantic Railroad - General Freight Agent - Outgoing Correspondence
Scope and Contents
This series consists of the bound copies of outgoing correspondence of the General Freight Agent, whose major function was to set the rates of freight traffic for the railroad. His correspondence deals with: lowering rates to attract new business, overly competitive rates, local tariff barriers, reconciling way bills on shipments, settlement of overcharges with shippers and carriers, shipping delays which diminished the goodwill of shippers and other railroads, rates for commodities and finished goods, and the economic relationships between different towns and the connecting roads that served them.
