Education - Georgia Library Commission - Public Education Scrapbooks
Scope and Contents
This series contains newspaper clipping scrapbooks and some loose clippings documenting both the work of the Georgia Library Service and the progress enjoyed by the local public libraries throughout the State of Georgia. Unfortunately for the researcher, the format of the scrapbooks as well as their arrangement has changed There are two basic formats employed, the geographical being the most widespread. During the earlier years, however, a subject approach was used. This format was also employed at various times throughout the overall time span of the series. The geographic format, though used for two time spans of considerable length each, is rather difficult to understand. There are two geographic divisions of the state represented in both chronological groupings. The Regional Library Systems are filed alphabetically in the first sequence under each time span. Unfortunately, however, the alphabetical arrangement is not by name of library region but by chief town in each region. For example, the clippings for the Uncle Remus Regional Library comprising the counties of Hancock, Jasper, Morgan and Putnam are filed under Madison, Georgia, the largest town in the region. This furthermore makes the second alphabetical arrangement for each time span, that of the county and municipal libraries, add to the confusion. These public libraries too, are arranged alphabetically by town or city possessing a library in this category. Obviously, a knowledge of the library organization in Georgia is necessary before using these scrapbooks. Since time spans of the scrapbooks overlap that of the loose clippings, the latter deal with subjects which could not be assigned to any of the regional or county and municipal libraries.
