Education - Georgia Library Commission - Secretary's Subject Files
Scope and Contents
This series contains: (1) correspondence (2) maps (3) Works Projects Administration training materials (4) supervisor's and annual reports (5) itineraries (6) narrative reports submitted by traveling library consultants (7) reference materials (8) requests for state aid for libraries (9) library statistics As the series title indicates, most of the files were created by the secretary of the Georgia Library Commission, but there are files in the series postdating the existence of that organization. The narrative reports are of particular interest in that they document the progress whereby the Commission counseled local librarians, county commissioners and others on improving facilities and services. Unfortunately, only a fragment of these reports survived. Many of the files document the institution of Federal aid to localities for public library services, first under the auspices of the Works Projects Administration (WPA) and later under provisions of the Lanham Act. This gradual trend necessitated the keeping of more and more statistical data on the libraries, some of which can be found in this series. Most of this survey data, however, is to be found in RGSGSERIES 12-7-101.
