Education - Georgia Library Commission - Library Survey Materials
Scope and Contents
This series contains various statistical survey materials collected primarily by Works Projects Administration (WPA) operatives in the State of Georgia. The practice of keeping these statistics apparently grew out of the increasingly important financial role played by the WPA and later other Federal aid programs. Although the forms in this series vary in format, the overall aim of all of them was to gather data on the local communities so as to assess financial needs of the libraries. The most common form lists: (1) the counties (2) the population of each (3) the total value of taxable property for state and county purposes (4) the tax rate and the libraries Sometimes the names of librarians and other concerned officials are included. It was apparently important for the respective libraries to justify their existence and futures with acceptable circulation figures. There was obviously a minimum figure established by the government, placing below which entitled a library to fewer funds. Accompanying correspondence and notes on forms chide various librarians for shortcomings in certain statistical categories. These forms document the role of the WPA in public library circles in Georgia from the institution of that particular phase of its operation to its dissolution in 1943.
