Scope and Contents
This series contains correspondence, memos, directives and supporting papers to and from: (1) agency personnel (internal), (2) officials of other state agencies, (3) officials of other state governments, (4) the Federal government and (5) private organizations. Also included are: (1) correspondence to and from private citizens concerning agency policies and services; (2) opinions on various issues and topics; (3) speeches, statements and related materials documenting events; (4) photographs; and (5) minutes of board and commission meetings. Early correspondence of the Secretary of State includes: (1) requests for jobs with the State, (2) requests for information on land grants, (3) requests for information on genealogy, (4) requests for information on the State of Georgia and her flag, (5) information relating to incorporating a business in Georgia, and (6) information relating to elections in Georgia. A good deal of genealogical and land grant information can be found in these early letters. The correspondence of Secretary of State Ben W. Fortson, Jr. (1946-1979), contains drafts of speeches, memos and other inter-office communications. Included is correspondence with Sen. Richard Russell, Sen. Herman Talmadge, Sen. Walter F. George, and Governors Ernest Vandiver and Marvin Griffin. Other correspondence includes: (1) the Dept. of Archives building program, (2) the national Civil War Centennial Committee, (3) the Jekyll Island Authority, (4) renovation of the Executive Mansion, (5) formation of the Georgia Hall of Fame, and (6) the gold plating of the Capitol dome.
