Secretary of State - Front Office - Newsclippings
Scope and Contents
This series consists of newspaper clippings kept by the staff of the Office of the Secretary of State for reference purposes. Almost all the clippings are from the Atlanta Journal and the Atlanta Constitution. Most clippings are concerned with the State government and its operations, Georgia political events and the State's history. Some clippings deal with the national political scene, Federal government operations and events of national importance (such as the moon landing of 1968 and the William Calley court martial of 1971). Originally this series included clippings about Mr. Ben W. Fortson, Jr., Secretary of State, but these clippings were removed from the series and retained in the Secretary of State's office. Some clippings are filed under somewhat unexpected subject headings. For example, items about political demonstrations held at the Capitol Building are filed under Building and Grounds and items about the need for gun control laws are filed under the heading of Gun Collection (which also contains clippings about Mr. Fortson's gun collection).
