Legislature - Commissions and Committees - Reports and Investigations

 Series
Identifier: 037-08-004

Scope and Contents

This series consists of original bound and unbound reports, investigations, minutes, newspaper clippings, testimony, correspondence and claims generated by committees, commissions, and joint and special committees enacted over the years by the General Assembly. A majority of the committees were formed by a Joint Resolution of the House and Senate, a House Resolution or a Senate Resolution. Some of the major topics the committees and commissions undertook to investigate and/or report on include the following (although this is not an inclusive list): impeachment trial of W. L. Goldsmith, Comptroller-General, for illegal sale of wild lands and consequential bribery charges; investigation into how the Western & Atlantic Railroad Co. managed its operations and subsequent inventory of holdings; investigation into various state agencies, schools and colleges; investigation into the conduct of various judges; investigation into the convict lease system and state penitentiary system; correspondence from the Georgia Education Commission; and report on State Constitution revision.

Arrangement Note

The records have been arranged, intellectually speaking, chronologically within various time frames and on a general basis. Due to earlier processing and different grouping of the records, many of the date spans overlap. Individual records within the various boxes are still arranged as they were years ago. Where a volume appears outside of a box it is so noted. Indexed items are also noted. Please see the following shelf list for an enumeration of the various committees, commissions and topics.

Physical Access Requirements

Proceedings of the Joint Investigation of Convict Lease System (SR 37, 1908) available on microfilm only.

Related Materials

In addition to this series, please see Record Group 1, Executive Department; Sub-group 5, Boards and Commissions. It should be noted that a majority of the topics investigated or reported on have either the Joint Resolution (JR), House Resolution (HR) or Senate Resolution (SR) designation along with a date. This valuable information can be used to trace down the exact reason a committee was formed in the first place. Please see series 37-1-1 for Bills and Resolutions of the General Assembly.
