State Property Control Commission - Western and Atlantic Railroad - Ncs Lease Contract and Amendment
Scope and Contents
This series consists of the original bound lease agreement and subsequent amendments to the agreement between the Western & Atlantic Railroad Commission and the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway. The original lease called for a fifty year period beginning December 27, 1919 to December 27, 1969. By an Act of the General Assembly on November 30, 1915, the Western & Atlantic Railroad was leased to the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway for complex political and economic reasons. The original document consists of seventeen legal size pages bound in a light blue binder with the State Seal attached by a purple ribbon. The lease was executed May 11, 1917. It bears the signatures of the Railroad Commissioners and the Secretary of State of Georgia as well as the signatures of Georgia Governor Nathaniel E. Harris and the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway president John Howe Peyton. The amendments are also executed on legal size paper but are stapled together and placed in a folder. It is requested that a researcher use a duplicate of the original lease due to the fragility and value of the original. This duplicate can be found in RGSGSERIES 85-1-7, Bound Minutes of the Western & Atlantic Railroad Commission.
